Translation of Idioms: How They are Reflected in Movie Subtitling

Idiomatic expressions are with a figurative meaning different from their literal meaning, and therefore, they cannot be understood literally. This study aims to scrutinize some aspects of the translation idiomatic in mystery movie entitled ‘Murder on Orient Express’. Seventy-seven were found movie. The idioms can categorized as follows: keywords uses (16) nouns adjectives (2), pairs (1), prepositions (7), phrasal verbs (26), verbal (5), special subjects key words categories (16), comparison (3). Phrasal idiom was most frequently occurred because mostly organized by verb comprising combination preposition or adverb. Further, rendering English Source Language (SL) into Indonesian Target (TL) employed strategies; paraphrase highly frequent strategy. strategy using an similar but dissimilar form also located high-frequency position continuum. Furthermore, omission strategies low frequency. Translation used translator wanted convey clearly possible while considering cultural difference between SL TL. To sum up, expression dominantly (34%), that applied translating them (56%).
